Shaun, an officer from West Yorkshire, was injured on duty in custody watching a prisoner when, seeing a colleague being assaulted, ran over to assist. Shaun was bitten, punched and kicked by the prisoner, which resulted in a dislocated shoulder. The prisoner went on to injure three other officers.
“I went to hospital and had my shoulder ‘popped’ back in which was the worst pain in my life and was on sick for just over three weeks whilst my arm was in a sling. I was then on restricted duties for around four months whilst having physio to gain strength and range of movement.”
Following the injury, Shaun was admitted to St Andrews where he received intensive physio and took part in numerous classes including shoulder hydro, stretch and boxfit.
“I was given several exercises by my physio to strengthen my shoulder and they helped give me the confidence to push myself harder as prior to coming I feared it might dislocate my shoulder if pushed too hard.
Throughout my time here, I feel stronger & fitter and have been educated to know what exercises work for me and my shoulder to continue when I leave.”
Upon leaving St Andrews, Shaun said he felt ready to go back to work thanks to the treatment.
“I will feel far more confident now if I get involved in a violent situation. My shoulder is stronger to deal with it.”
When asked if Shaun would recommend signing up to his colleagues, he responded by telling us,
“Without doubt there’s not much in life you can get for £1.80 a week. It’s a no brainer for me, best money you will spend."
