Alison Webster, a Police Officer in the Merseyside Constabulary, recently spent two weeks at the Police Treatment Centres in Harrogate where she took advantage of the class leading Physiotherapy treatment on offer. Here is Alisons story.
"I have paid into the Police Treatment Centres for all of my service and consider myself fortunate that I have never needed it. I haven’t been seriously injured on duty or suffered a serious illness.
In my spare time I am a keen ‘fun runner’ who increased their miles during lock down and actually ran a marathon this year at the age of 51.
However, the lack of warming up, cooling down and stretching properly coupled with ignoring an ongoing niggly pain meant I had calf issues that I could no longer ignore and didn’t feel I should run at all.
A colleague suggested I try Harrogate and I felt a bit cynical that they may not be able to do anything and also a little bit guilty that my injury didn’t warrant treatment.
I am so glad I went. The physios were so patient and really took the time to assess my injury properly and come up with a recovery plan. Under their watchful eye my confidence returned and I started running again. This time with exercises to strengthen my calf and Pilates for balance and core. I took every class and opportunity offered and especially loved the Hydrotherapy pool.
The facilities and care offered at Harrogate are first class. I learnt so much around injury prevention also. If you are not paying into the PTC I strongly advise you to start, you never know when you might need it. If you are ignoring injury like I did make an enquiry and see if they can help.
Put simply it is life changing, I am back running and have knocked a minute a mile off my personal best!"
