A BTP Officer who recently visited the centres with lower back pain after an incident at work. Whilst they tried to manage the problems with local physiotherapy treatment, the injury became more problematic.
'I had two incidents where the
issues with my back became painful it prevented me from working for a period of
time.
I attended the PTC for the
first time in my career. From the beginning the care provided by nursing and
physiotherapy staff was second to none. I was allocated a dedicated physiotherapist
who I was to see each day for the duration of my stay.
I was prescribed specific
classes such as Pilates, stretch classes and a back
school class. I was also given a programme of exercises.
The facilities and classes
are designed to aid recovery or management of the problem.
Having attended my back felt
stronger and I was armed with self-management skills to take this forward.'
The Officer worked hard during their two week stay with the exercises provided by the Physiotherapist, however they also commented on the holistic approach of the centres.
'
The most striking thing at
PTC was the caring atmosphere of the centre which is achieved by all the staff
working so hard for us to get well.
Attention is given to our
care. The centre is relaxed and friendly.
From arriving quite uncertain
with what the two weeks would hold, I soon discovered PTCs uniqueness where officers
can relax and put stresses of work to one side, whilst the focus is on you
getting better or improving the management of your condition.'
The Officer left the PTC with a tool kit of exercises to manage their condition, and whilst they will never fully recover from their injuries, being able to effectively manage symptoms is key to them remaining at work.
'I wouldn’t hesitate in
recommending PTC to colleagues of any force. We do a hard stressful and
physical job and we owe it to ourselves to take time out to look after our
health.'
