The PTC is now delighted to be welcoming Derbyshire Officers for treatment. The decision was taken by Derbyshire Police Federation, from 1st April 2017; Derbyshire Constabulary would change the provision of rehabilitation treatment to the Police Treatment Centres.
The federation provides comments on its reasons for making the move;
“The PTC at Harrogate offers facilities of a high standard which are comparable with the current provider, however the subscription for members is cheaper for serving officers, cheaper for retired officers, inclusive of police staff in front line roles, closer geographically and therefore a better deal for all.”
As well as serving and retired officers, the PTC has now extended its eligiblity (from January 2016) to include these new groups; PCSO’s, Special Constables and Detention/Custody Officers (employed by the Chief Constable or Police Crime Commissioner). These groups can now receive the same benefit as serving and retired Officers and after signing up, can become eligible to receive treatment at the PTC should injury or illnesses occur. A 3 month amnesty campaign will be running from May - July, for further information click here.
One of the first Officers to come through the door and access treatment, shares his experiences with us;
Grant Tyers, a serving Police Officer from Derbyshire Constabulary attended St Andrews on 10 April, 2017 on the Physiotherapy Programme.
“In 2016, I suffered injuries in two motorcycle accidents. Having recovered from the first, I was injured again in November 2016.My broken bones were healed but my hand movement and strength were reduced resulting in a prolonged stint on restricted duties.”
The timetable includes numerous classes for various injuries, and the daily physio treatment has strengthened my grip and together has improved my flexibility.”
As well as the treatment, Grant found the atmosphere benefitted his overall experience.
“Upon arrival, I was touched to see the Union Flag at half mast, honouring a fallen Met Officer. This simple gesture made me feel at home, knowing we were put first.
The building is first class, clean with excellent facilities including pool, fully equipped gym, physio department and 24 hour nursing staff.
I found the staff knowledgeable and supportive. I was also able to arrange for my wife to attend for B&B over the weekend I’d be away.. Relieving any stressful concerns.”

Grant has been on restricted duties since the accidents,but is now hopeful of returning to full duties following his visit.
“I would have no reservations to give my support and recommendation to anyone in need of rehabilitation.”
Another serving Derbyshire Police Officer, David Morrell, attended St Andrews on the 3 April 2017. David attended the Physiotherapy Programme for the first time following a fall that resulted in him fracturing his tibia.
“I have received daily appointments with a Physiotherapist which has enabled me to develop a recovery programme over my two week stay, created to suit my needs and achieve my targets.”
Whilst at St Andrews, David was able to take part in numerous classes & exercise prescription designed to support the daily intensive physiotherapy he was receiving.
“This included use of the gym, classes created for lower leg recovery and balance and coordination. I have also used both the hydrotherapy and swimming pools daily. I found the anti-gravity treadmill particularly useful.”
David made use of the first-class rehab facilities including the anti-gravity treadmill, which he found particularly useful in his rehab due to it being a weight-bearing injury. The unique unweighting NASA technology provides the ability to speed up rehabilitation from illness, injury or surgery by getting the patient moving a lot sooner, with reduced weight-bearing on lower extremity injuries with less pain and impact.
It wasn’t just the intensive physiotherapy that benefited David, he also enjoyed the change of environment and peaceful location the centre provides.
“I have found the overall relaxed and laid back environment of the centre an additional benefit to my recovery. The facilities are excellent.”
David had been on sick leave due to the injury before arriving at St Andrews. Following his two weeks, he has returned to work on restricted duties.
“I feel my visit to the centre will give me one last push and speed up my recovery towards returning to work on full duties.”
