PTC Castlebrae were fortunate to host Dr Marshall Garrett for a visit to the Centre .
Marshall is a world renowned leading expert on Minor/Major Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) or what used to be more commonly referred to as Concussion and was invited to the PTC today by Patrick our CEO. He is a good friend to policing and recently spoke at the Scottish Police Federation Conference in March about the risk, danger and treatment of MTBI in policing.
His visit was an opportunity to us to brief Marshall about what we do at the PTC to help him to raise awareness of the charity and to signpost his police patients to the charity for treatment when required. It was also an opportunity for him to host a masterclass on MTBI for our Physiotherapy and Fitness Team at Castlebrae on what MTBI symptoms to look out for amongst our police patient base who may be attending the PTC for other reasons, but who might also have suffered a recent head injury, and then what we at the PTC might be able to do to help, treat and support those of our police patients in this category.
Marshall was hugely impressed with our facilities and treatment programmes at the PTC and commented that “ police officers put themselves in the front line every day protecting the general public which often results in them suffering physical and mental health injuries and they deserve everything that the PTC does for them, and all of us in the general public should be very grateful for the work that police officers do on our behalf, and we should do everything that we can do to ensure that they are properly cared for and supported both at the PTC and more widely beyond”.
This was a really informative visit that gave the PTC much to think about and will undoubtedly improve how we are able to treat any MTBI injuries that we identify in the future amongst our police patients.
