A Foundation stone was laid today to commemorate the building of the new Clinical Services Wing, at the Police Treatment Centres. The stone was unveiled by Liam Kelly, PTC Chair of Trustees and Mark Lindsay MBE, Chairman of Police Care UK.
The new Centre of Excellence has now been completed at St Andrews in Harrogate and will focus on supporting the wellbeing of the Police Family, with an expansion to the existing Psychological Wellbeing Programme at the Police Treatment Centres.
Liam Kelly, Chair of Trustees at the Police Treatment Centres, said:
“Today marks the opening of our new Clinical Services Wing which will support the Police Family. We are now looking forward to our future collaboration with Police Care UK. The PTC Board of Trustees are committed and keen to ‘future proof’ the PTC and are really excited that this joint working will enable both the development and complementing of our existing programmes and provide more services.”
In addition to enabling an expansion to the existing Psychological Wellbeing Programme at the Police Treatment Centres, the new Centre of Excellence represents a strategic partnership between Police Care UK and the Police Treatment Centres.
Mark Lindsay, Chair of Police Care UK, said “This is a fantastic venture between two of the leading Police Charities in the country, and Police Care UK are both proud and excited to be involved. Partnering with the Police Treatment Centres to establish the new Clinical Services Wing as a Centre of Excellence will enable Police Care UK to emphasise our key mission; to reduce the impact of harm on Police and their families.“
The Psychological Wellbeing Programme is a two week structured programme designed specifically for Serving Officers with mild to moderate anxiety and depression, and stress related issues.
An independent study evaluating the effectiveness and impact of the Psychological Wellbeing Programme provided at the PTC found a statistically significant improvement in health, anxiety, depression and wellbeing after completion of the programme.
Recommendations from the study were to focus on and evaluate the medium to long term impacts of the Programme and to consider a more formalised follow up consultation and peer support. This is something the Clinical Team are actively pursuing together with updating the Programme with some new elements.
Together, the charities aim to establish the Centre as a national specialist facility focusing on building resilience to better support the wellbeing of officers and staff and providing access to treatment that reflects the needs of policing, potentially developing a specific Post Traumatic Stress programme in the future.
