For the next two weeks, Police Care UK are running a new Intensive Trauma Treatment Pilot to help Police Officers living with Complex-PTSD. Working with our delivery partner, The Police Treatment Centres (PTC). The pilot is being hosted at their Centre in Harrogate and follows our £2.5m contribution to the PTC Clinical Services Wing to help better support the wellbeing of Officers and staff and provide access to treatment that reflects the needs of UK policing.
This pilot builds on successful trials in The Netherlands and extensive work to adapt the treatment to suit the bespoke needs of UK Police Officers. It is brand new to the UK and does not exist anywhere else.
Following NICE approved clinical interventions, this exciting new service is a residential programme focussing on both physical and psychological health intensively over a two-week period. The residential aspect means that candidates can fully dedicate themselves to the programme and immerse themselves in the treatment and therapies available.
All candidates are serving UK Police Officers and all have a confirmed diagnosis of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). Each candidate is individually assessed for suitability in advance and their programme adjusted to their ability. Police Care UK and The Police Treatment Centres have worked collaboratively to design the inclusion and exclusion criteria for all participants to ensure that they will be comfortable and suitable to undertake this intensive programme. They must be physically fit enough to take part in exercise sessions, have no co-existing drug or alcohol dependency issues and be comfortable in a residential environment with other Police personnel at the host location.
The service evaluation will be run for the next 2 weeks with a further 2 scheduled for later in the year. Post treatment, the progress of all the participants will be monitored and the project evaluated as a whole, to see if this is a successful model for treating Police Officers with C-PTSD. It is a hugely exciting project and we are tremendously excited to be delivering this service to support the UK Police family specifically tackling CPTSD, for which there are no bespoke services but there is extensive need.
This service is only available via referral through Police Forces signed up to participate and we look forward to working with them for future intakes. We would like to thank all the forces who signed up to the pilot and The National Police Wellbeing Service for their support.
